2018 has been designated as European Year of Cultural Heritage and The Liberties Cultural Association has organised a packed programme of events over the month to mark the importance of cultural heritage to the area.

 

SUNDAY 15 JULY, 12.30-15.00

Liz Gillis, Cathy Scuffil and James Madigan will bring you on a guided walk up historic Meath Street. The tour starts at the Portico of the Old Coombe Hospital on The Coombe and will amble up Meath Street to end at St Catherine’s Church/Grotto at approx 2pm.

As this event is funded by The Heritage Council, afterwards there will be hot and cold food served in The Little Flower on Meath Street – www.littleflowerpennydinners.ie.

The walk is free and donations to The Little Flower are welcome.

FRIDAY 20 JULY, 10.00 – 11.00

James Madigan, Tour of Meath Street as part of The Liberties Festival 2018

A short walk up a street with a long history, meeting some of the shopkeepers and other locals. Meet at the Portico of the Old Coombe Hospital.

SATURDAY 21 JULY, 3 – 5pm

Join historian Liz Gillis to explore The Rebel Liberties – as part of The Liberties Festival 2018

Meet at St Catherine’s Church, Thomas Street (duration 2 hours) to uncover the rebellious past of one of Dublin’s most historic areas.

The walk is free.

SUNDAY 22 JULY, 10 – 11.30am

Linda Taylor will be your guide on a walk around the ancient Liberty of Saint Patrick’s Close. which was Dublin’s last surviving Liberty. The tour will follow the boundary of this medieval liberty and uncover some of it’s long forgotten buildings and streets. Meet on Patrick’s Street, in front of St Patrick’s Cathedral (at the Big Blue Door).

The tour is free and donations to the St Patrick’s Cathedral Conservation and Restoration Fund are welcome. The tour is part of the Liberties Festival 2018.

SUNDAY JULY 29, 12 – 2.30pm

Something in the Air: A celebration of the traditional music heritage of the Liberties. The Liberties Cultural Association, in association with The Cle Club are organising a musical walking tour, celebrating the rich musical heritage of The Liberties.

This event is Heritage Council Funded and is part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.

Starting at 12 noon in Oscar Square for Music and Song with light refreshments on arrival.  The walk will weave its way through The Liberties, with a special focus on the proud legacy of Uileann Piping, recently recognised as an important and unique Cultural Heritage symbol by UNESCO.  This walk will also celebrate the poet Zozimus, Biddy Mulligan (the Pride of The Coombe) and the living musical tradition of The Liberties.

The walk will end at 2.30pm with a rousing Cle Club Session in The Lark Inn on Meath Street.

Who we are: The Liberties Cultural Association is a voluntary group that organises free events of The Liberties and surrounding neighbourhoods. We have held 9 events to date, over 500 people have attended and we have fundraised almost €1,500 for local charities.
