RTE’s ‘Building Ireland’: In Search of the Lost Roe Distillery

In the second half of the 19th century, The Liberties included some of the world’s largest producers and most innovative brewers and distillers. At the heart of the famed ‘Golden Triangle’ sat the sprawling George Roe & Sons Distillery, in the 1880’s the biggest worldwide producer of whiskey, turning out an incredible 2m gallons of the amber nectar at times. By 1926, the distillery had closed and is now largely forgotten among the brands of Irish whiskey that survived the decline of the 20th century.

The current RTE series ‘Building Ireland’ sets out in search of Roe’s and tells the story of the growth and decline of Irish whiskey, the social aspects of the brewing and distilling business on Dublin and Ireland, the Great Whiskey Fire and re-emergence of Irish whiskey in the 21st century.

The programme was first broadcast on Friday 28th October. View it here on the RTE Player.
