After a seven year absence, one of Dublin’s most iconic trading spaces is getting its market magic back. Newmarket Flea launches on Sunday, July 20th in Newmarket, running from 11am to 4pm, and aims to bring new life and energy back to a square steeped in history.
The last flea market held in Newmarket was in 2018, when the beloved Dublin Flea Market was forced to cease trading due to redevelopment. Now, Newmarket Flea hopes to pick up where it left off – while adding its own mix of vintage fashion, antiques, vinyl, bric-a-brac, crafts, art and curious treasures, brought together by a community of independent traders, collectors and creatives.
The launch is backed by Dublin City Council and Teeling Whiskey Distillery, and forms part of a three month pilot running across July, August and September. If the response is strong, organisers plan to make the market a regular monthly fixture in the heart of Dublin 8.
“There’s a real appetite to see a flea market return to the square at Newmarket,” says organiser Ian Dowling, an antique dealer and local resident. “This square has over 300 years of trading history, it’s one of Dublin’s oldest market sites. It was designed as a place for markets, and for generations it was a thriving centre of commerce and community life in the Liberties. We’re just a small team of locals trying to bring that spirit back. This isn’t just about stalls and vintage treasures, it’s about returning the square to its original purpose.”
Newmarket Flea picks up where the old Dublin Flea left off, but brings its own energy and a strong sense of local community. With the Iveagh Markets and Mother Redcaps still shuttered, there’s a real need for spaces like this.
We want to reignite the trading spirit of the square, support small traders, and give people a reason to explore this part of the city again on a Sunday. We’re urging people to come out, show their support, and help turn this pilot into something permanent.”
Entry is free, and all are welcome – whether you’re hunting for treasures, soaking up the atmosphere, or just out for a Sunday wander. Don’t miss it!
