Getting creative at NCAD

Dublin’s Premier Design District

Home to NCAD, Ireland’s largest art and design college, The Liberties also hosts a vibrant local artistic community and a wealth of design and craft related businesses. From quirky galleries and artists studios, to craft and curio stores, there’s much to see and do in Dublin’s premier ‘design district’.

Over 1,500 art and design students populate Thomas Street each year, bring a life and vibrancy (and a touch of creative chaos!) to the area. The summer Graduate Shows at NCAD are a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar. In recent years, the college has expanded it’s footprint: with its Postgrad & Research Annex is located on James’s Street, while the main Thomas Street campus includes the prestigious NIVAL & Edward Murphy Library. You can also visit year-round exhibitions in the NCAD Gallery, located in the Harry Clarke Building.

And there’s more. Respected venues such as Pallas Projects/Studios and Mother’s Tankstation host year-round shows and exhibitions, and foster local talent. Download a Map to some of Dublin’s best galleries and cultural spaces. The area is home to many of Dublin’s best known architecture and design practices, as well as a wide range of companies specialising in media, website design and content.

The Liberties also retains a strong independent retail sector, from the bustling markets of Thomas Street and Meath Street, to the Art & Antiques Quarter on Francis Street. Each summer the area comes alive with The Liberties Festival – Dublin’s longest running (and best!) arts and community festival. And we have our growing Culture Date with Dublin 8 programme supporting engagement with the many national cultural institutions and attractions in this area and neighbouring Kilmainham and Inchicore. There is so much to see and do, and always room for more.

If you’re looking to locate in one of Dublin’s most dynamic areas… then you won’t beat #D8!
