The Liberties Weavers have created and published a new free walking tour of The Liberties that celebrates the area’s rich weaving and textile tradition. Featuring three interconnected routes and over 30 points of interest, the interactive guide tells the history of weaving in the area and highlights various buildings and places connected with the trade.
Developed with the assistance of The Heritage Council, the Weaving Map of The Liberties, has been created and researched by the Liberties Weavers themselves, with assistance from well-known local historian Cathy Scuffil. The guide also features specially created illustrations by Sophia Nicotta, an NCAD Fine Art Graduate who originally proposed the map.
Marja Almqvist, a founding member of The Liberties Weavers and one of the key moverx behind the map stressed that “the map is an evolving project, and we are keen to hear more of the community’s own recollections of weaving in the area that can help is to expand the features in the map and guide”.
“We know that there is much more to discover, and any errors or inaccuracies stand open to correction. We invite the wider community to explore what is known already and to join in the search for more”.
