Dublin City Council has published the final plans for a €5m refurbishment of Meath Street.
The Meath Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme, which has been subject to design and planning in recent years, was approved by city councillors in December 2023. Since then, a further phase of work has been undertaken to develop detailed drawings for the project, ahead of tendering for the main works contractor in coming weeks.
The public realm revamp will include:
Much of the work done at detailed design stage involves surveying and mapping of underground utilities and understanding site conditions, as well incorporating some of the suggestions that arose during the public consultations.
A series of advance works by utilities will be required before repaving begins. This includes a major upgrade of an existing 19thC watermains along the centre of the street by water utility, Uisce Éireann. The old cast iron mains will be re-lined with modern materials to bring it up to modern standards.
The detailed design drawings were presented to local businesses and the public on 23rd April, ahead of the advance works, expected to start in coming weeks; while the main public realm works are planned from September. Construction will take 12-15 months and will progress in stages along the street so that access to the street is maintained. The main works contractor will be responsible for communications and day to day management of the site.
Meath Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme is a project of Dublin City Council supported by the Urban Regeneration & Development Fund under Project Ireland 2040.
