Two upcoming festivals offer great opportunities to delve into the history and heritage and architecture of The Liberties and Dublin.

 

The Dublin Festival of History is an annual free festival, brought to you by Dublin City Council, and organised by Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with the Dublin City Council Culture Company.

Now in its tenth year, the festival has built a reputation for shining a fresh perspective on history and its importance in our everyday lives, attracting best-selling Irish and international historians to Dublin for a high-profile programme of history talks and debate each Autumn. The 2022 festival will run from Monday 26 September to Sunday 16 October. Look out for:

  • Weaving with The Liberties Weavers
  • Events marking the centenery of the Civil War
  • Poetry by Stephen James Smith
  • Talks by local historian Cathy Scuffil
  • Dublin Decoded Walks of Dublin’s Medieval Walls
  • And join this year’s Medieval Dublin Symposium

Open House Dublin is a free festival of architecture with 100+ guided tours, films, exhibitions and events taking place across the city from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 October. Brought to you by the Irish Architecture Foundation, Open House Dublin celebrates great architecture, urban design and the people that contribute to the creation of built Dublin. Among this year’s highlights in Dublin 8 are:

  • The Guinness Legacy in The Liberties, looking at the bequests of the remarkable family behind the brewing behemoth
  • 100 Years of Fairbrother’s Fields – The Tenters, exploring this iconic housing scheme in its centenery year
  • All Change: Newmarket & Environs, a walking tour of the historic market area as it undergoes unprecedented change
  • Marsh’s Library, the unique 17thC library and its beautiful book collection
  • Roe & Co Whiskey Distillery in the former 1940s Guinness Power Station
  • Bridgefoot Park, the latest addition to amenities in The Liberties
  • And a chance to experience the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral roof tour.
