The Liberties scooped a runner-up award in its category – Cities – at the National Enterprise Town Awards held in Kilkenny last evening. This year, 83 towns and urban areas took part in these awards which celebrate local entrepreneurship and community spirit and which are sponsored by Bank of Ireland. The overall award – of Ireland’s Most Enterprising Town – went to a worthy winner, Letterkenny in Co Donegal.
The acknowledgment for The Liberties is a great boost to the area’s local businesses and community. While we lost out to Galway city in our category, it was a privilege to have successfully contended with so many of Ireland’s most feted towns and cities.
The competition judges visited The Liberties in October and received a presentation by members of The Liberties Business Forum at NCAD; visited our two enterprise clusters at The Digital Hub and The GEC; discovered urban regeneration in progress at Newmarket (by horse and carriage of course!); met some of our great small businesses like John Lawrence, Fennelly Antiques, The Constant Knitter and Container Coffee; and learned about the partnership between businesses, the community and the local authority that is transforming Dublin 8.
This was The Liberties second year to enter the Awards. And next year we definitely have our sights set on the top spot!
