One of Thomas Street’s longest running business is closing after almost 40 years. Finestyle Furniture, which has been kitting out the denizens of Dublin 8 with beds, sofas and other furniture since the mid-1980s will close its doors for good on Thursday 18th July.
Owner Brendan Henry, who has been a fixture on Thomas Street for four decades, cites the changing nature of retailing and the move to online as his reasons to finally bow out. “Smaller furniture stores like mine are now fewer and far between in the city. Customers have increasingly moved to the larger out of centre retail parks or simply buy online. There’s not a lot you can do… its progress, I suppose”.
While the main showroom will close, Brendan will continue to operate a furniture re-upholstering service and promises to still be seen out and about on Thomas Street.
“After 37 years on Thomas Street it feels like the right time to move on to something new. A lot of my traditional customers have moved on or are venturing less and less into the city after Covid. And Thomas Street has changed dramatically in recent years: its much less of a shopping street.”
Finestyle’s next door neighbour Vision Ireland will be expanding into No 74, having vacated its ‘Home’ store on Francis Street in recent weeks.
“I can look back on some great times on this street. Its always been entertaining. Always full of character”, says Henry.
