Heritage Week: 15th to 23rd August

Over the past number of years, the popularity of National Heritage Week has increased year on year. In 2025 there were over 2,500 heritage events across the island of Ireland, a record year for the number of events.

This year the Heritage Council invites you to explore the heritage events in your area through the theme of “Heritage At Risk”. Taking place from 15th – 23rd August, this year’s National Heritage Week will give you the opportunity to think about and seek out the heritage places and practices that are endangered and require our attention.

In 2026, National Heritage Week explores the theme “Heritage at Risk” At a time of accelerating environmental change, social transformation, and technological shift, the theme invites us to reflect on what is putting our heritage at risk — and how we can respond with care, creativity, and collective responsibility.

Among the events announced so far in The Liberties and Dublin 8:

• Liberties: Streets, Stories and Public Spaces  – a walk and talk with Trees for Tenters exploring the area around Newmarket and St Luke’s Avenue – 16th August
• The Belfast Blitz of 1941 and the Irish Response – historian Las Fallon talks about the unique event of cross border humanitarian assistance during WWII – 15th August
• Medieval Dublin Walk – Adrian le Harivel takes you on a journey of lost river, long gone walls and gates and life in the medieval city of Dublin – 15th August
• Lunchtime and Evening Recitals at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral feat. Peter & The Wolf, The Music of Phantom of the Opera and more – Various dates
• Evening Lecture: Church of Ireland Women in the Revolutionary Period – Albert Fenton looks at the contribution of three women to the events of 1910 – 1923 – 17th August
• Art and Architecture of Christ Church Tour – Discover the 1000 year old cathedral striking art and architecture – 15th August
• Urban Fossil Walk at Christ Church Cathedral – 15th August
• Join Dublinia to celebrate Ireland’s history and heritage with our Viking tours! – 15th to 23rd August
• Bully’s Acre Cemetery Tours at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham – always a favourite! – 16th & 22nd August
• Preserving our Collections – a series of workshops at The Edward Worth Library in Dr Steeven’s Hospital – Various dates
