Work will start in February on a major public realm upgrade of Meath Street.
Dublin City Council has appointed Cairn Construction as the main works contractor for the project, which will see new paving, improved pedestrian facilities, an improved road layout, the addition of street trees and landscaping and the upgrading of services along the iconic market street.
The ambitious project is intended to revitalise the street, bolstering traditional retail activity, while also providing more space for a variety of other street uses, such as cafe terraces, street trading and market events.
A design process involving local traders and residents took place in 2020/2021 and the new design was approved by city councillors at the end of 2023.
Since then detailed design work has been undertaken, which included a major upgrade last summer by Uisce Éireann of the large district watermains that runs under Meath Street.
It is expected that paving work will begin at the south end of the street, between Carman’s Hall and The Coombe, and progress in phase along the street, ensuring that disruption is minimised and the street remains open. The project will continue into the second half of 2027.
Cairn Construction will be responsible for regular communication with residents and businesses on the street over the period of the project.
The Meath Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme is part of Dublin City Council’s ongoing investment in The Liberties and is support funded by the Urban Regeneration & Development Fund.
