The Liberties newest public space, Weaver Park on Cork Street, is being nominated for a prestigious European prize that celebrates great new urban spaces.
Weaver Park opened in September 2017 and is the first of two flagship parks to be developed in The Liberties under the Liberties Greening Strategy, a major investment programme by Dublin City Council in green infrastructure and public realm. Designed by Ait Landscape for Dublin City Council Parks & Landscaping Division, Weaver Park features a skate bowl, play areas, a lawn and relaxation areas and planting. The park transformed a formerly vacant site on Cork Street, previously occupied by housing, into a major amenity for the local community.
The park has been nominated for a European Prize for Urban Public Space, which is an awards initiative run by the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB).
Nominees are chosen through the CCCB’s board of experts selecting recently completed public areas in Europe that ”foster the public character of urban spaces and their capacity for fostering social cohesion”.
The prize, in highlighting the relational and civic aspects of the typically urban space, thus differs from other initiatives that are focused on the figure of the architect, and from awards given for landscape-centred projects.
